The Secretary for Transport and Logistics of the HKSAR Government, Mr. Lam Sai-hung, pointed out in his weblog on the 18th that, with the unique advantages of the Hong Kong International Airport in terms of cargo transportation in all directions, flexibility and high efficiency, the Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Greater Bay Area can be formed into a huge transportation network with direct access to the whole world, which will further enhance the international competitiveness of the manufacturing industry and the import and export of the Greater Bay Area, and create a multi-win situation.

Lam Sai-hung on the same day published a weblog entitled "Hong Kong and Dongguan cooperation in the development of air and sea cargo intermodal transport", and mentioned in the article, the Hong Kong Airport Authority (AA) signed a memorandum of understanding with the Zhuhai Municipal People's Government at the end of last year, to join hands to open the "through the Zhuhai-Hong Kong Fly" (i.e., through the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge land connection to realize the "air-land-air"). (i.e. to realize "air-land-air" through passenger service through the land connection of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge), to develop Hong Kong-Zhuhai international air cargo business, to promote the construction of a high-end aviation industry cluster, and to actively discuss the AA's shareholding in the Zhuhai Airport. Recently, the AA has also signed the "Cooperation Framework Agreement on the "Dongguan-Hong Kong International Airport Logistics Park cum Airside Sea-Air Intermodal Terminal" Project" with the Dongguan Municipal People's Government, with a view to implementing and promoting the long-term development of the "Sea-Air Intermodal Transportation of Cargo" mode between the two places. "He said that last year, the Hong Kong International Airport handled a large number of cargoes.

He said that last year, the HKIA handled about 4.2 million tons of cargo and airmail. In terms of cargo weight, the cargo handled by the HKIA accounted for about 2% of the total cargo volume of Hong Kong, while in terms of cargo value, it accounted for more than 40% of Hong Kong's import and export trade, thus making a significant contribution to the local economy.

Mr. Lam added that Hong Kong is the most important aviation gateway for cargo to and from the Greater Bay Area and handled 75% of the import and export air cargo to and from the Greater Bay Area before the outbreak. Even during the outbreak, the Hong Kong International Airport continued to function as a cargo hub for the Greater Bay Area, becoming the world's busiest cargo airport again in 2021.
